Dear graduates: Never ever wait for your defining moments because they have already passed and won’t come when you have nothing else but your ability to dream and make a wish. Your moments in school have already defined you long before you’ve graduated, whether you acknowledge or deny it. Many times I’ve given opportunity to young people, whether though internship or on-the-job training, chance to part-own a business with me, or simply work in my office to hone their skills and talents. But it occurs to me that, many times, some don’t have a vision for themselves. Some, sadly, would like to see what they can get more than what they can give. I have no problem with self-interest, as I know how it differs from selfishness. Self-interest is fine. What else is there if it doesn’t serve your desire, right? But to ask even before you can prove something, and ask even you can do at least one little thing to show your worth, I think, is too much. So, the issue isn’t really whether there are opportunities or none because we all know there are. The issue is our willingness to sweat it out. Don’t be a victim of your own bad decision and wishful thinking. The world isn’t a huge Department of Social Welfare and Development. There’s too little you can expect from life. Thus, it is wiser to expect from your self. Your ability to dream doesn’t make you better than anybody else for they, too, can dream even bigger dreams than you do. Your ability to take action will define your moments. Never ever wait for it. Get out and face the world and go light up the night. —LLOYD LUNA, author of Paano Maging Successful.
